From Ellis' Desk:
Pentecost/Mother's Day
Pentecost: The Feast of Pentecost, aka the Feast of Harvest occurred seven weeks after the Sabbath that followed Passover. It was also call the day of First Fruits. It was a mid-summer celebration when the people brought in the loaves made of the first grain of the New Year's crop. Also brought were lambs, goats, calves and not to be left out-the New Wine! It was a time akin to that of the county fair. After the crops were judged "(Kosherized)", the partying started. There were lots of free samples, eating and drinking. The reason the disciples could not have been drunk before nine is that the new wine had not been cleared yet for consumption by the Priests.
God has a way of acting when lots of people are around. At census time, Jesus was born when all the descendants of David are gathered in Bethlehem. Jesus was crucified when thousands of people were gathered back to Jerusalem for Passover. Likewise with Pentecost, people came from throughout the Empire to offer tithes, sacrifices and first fruits and to party.
We know the story well: the disciples were gathered together when the Holy Spirit came upon them and even though they spoke different languages, the bystanders from throughout the empire understood. Christians call it the birthday of the church. "Pentecost" is invested with new meaning. It no longer refers only to the summer harvest festival, but the empowerment of God's people.
Mother's Day: It is a day when Mothers are honored. Motherhood is seen as being virtuous in its own right. However, most of us are glad that Mom saw fit to have and raise us in particular. We all have mothers and most of us are glad Mom went through it all and saw to it the we were fed and educated. Which brings me to that word "Nurture" which I believe is where Mother's Day and Pentecost come together.
No one Mom can do the job of nurturing alone. The church shares the job of nurturing from the cradle to the grave. I was the kind of kid who needed lots of guidance and discipline. There wasn't enough of my mother left to do the job. (I was the youngest of nine!) Thank God the church was there for me.
Jesus knew that the awesome task of ministry would overwhelm the church, so he empowered it with the Holy Spirit so that nurture, guidance, healing and learning could take place. So take some time as you honor your mother to express thanks to God who sent His Spirit to help her out.
Lovingly, Ellis
